Fun Festive DIY Wreath with Jennifer Snyder

DIY Festive Wreath with Instructions

Jennifer Snyder here today continuing the holiday and Christmas festivities right up to the last moment.  Need to whip up a last minute gift?   This is super easy and one of those projects that looks like it took forever in "fussy land" to create.  Let that just be our little secret.

Quick DIY Instructions: 

 

Step 1.  I started the project with some fun products from FloraCraft  - specifically FloraCraft Burlap Garland   (which is a "must have" staple in my craft room)  and a  FloraCraft 6" Styrofoam Wreath .  

Step 2.  I wrapped the foam with the burlap garland and secured it with hemp cording.  Adding the cording was a second thought actually after the project was well underway.  I realized that glue and straight pins were not going to keep my burlap in place so I decided to wrap the wreath in cording.  

Step 3.  This is how it turned out before I started to embellish.   

 

 

Step 4.  Embellish with your choice of gorgeous Petaloo flowers.  While I chose Christmas themed embellishments (because I needed a gift), imagine how gorgeous this would look with flowers for any occasion or any season.  Give it a nautical look with some red glitter star picks, white ruffled roses and blue velvet hydrangea accents...or a beautiful spring feel with purple canvas flowers dotted with yellow roses.

DIY Sculpted Canvas and Matching Card

Hello.  Jennifer Snyder here to share more autumn goodness using the beautiful colors of the season.  Today, I am sharing a canvas/sculpture and matching card crafted using Petaloo flowers, FloraCraft Foam Balls  and other assorted products from FloraCraft in conjunction with Authentique's Harvest paper collection.   

My inspiration for both projects started with the Authentique Harvest paper with it's warm orange, browns and festive theme.  The card came first.  I picked an adorable 3"x4" image from the journal card sheet called "Harvest One".  

 

The adorable pilgrim boy is pushing a cart full of pumpkins, squash and produce from the field.  I selected the Petaloo flowers to accentuate the colors of his abundant harvest.      

 

Here are the close ups of the gorgeous Petaloo floral cluster.  

The green center flower, Petaloo Botanica Mini-Pistachio , makes me smile because I think it looks like cauliflower in the cluster.  How perfect!

 

My makeshift cauliflower is surrounded by Petaloo Sugar  Mini Mocha flowers and dotted with some older Petaloo berry sprays from my stash in burgundy.   The finishing touches include a rich burgundy ribbon and some paper punched pine sprigs.  

 

  

 

After I created the card, I did some thinking and imagined how fun it would be to make those wonderful fruits come to life so I set out to make it happen.  That's how the canvas came about.   If you keep scrolling down, I provide a mini-tutorial as to how I created the assorted produce.  

 

 The canvas started with FloraCraft's  foam balls.  This package was great because there were various sized balls to help make my vision possible.  The pumpkin was created with the 4inch foam ball while the apple and pear were created using the 2.5inch foam balls.  

  

Step 1.  Cut foam ball in half so that it can fit nicely in a reverse canvas setting.  

Step 2. Cut a piece of muslin cotton to wrap and cover the foam.  I added color to the muslin by using a combination of mediums to color the fabric - some mists and inks.  A pumpkin has a variety of colors - yellow, brown, green, orange - so I used a variety of colors.   

 

Notice in the photo below that the fabric is not totally colored. I left a bit of white space in the fabric to provide a bright highlight on the finished piece.  Do not worry that the colors are not blended nice and softly at this point.    

  

Step 3. I saturated the muslin cotton with a sculpture medium, then draped the fabric over the foam ball, smoothing till I was happy.  

 

There are many mediums that will work well including the old fashioned and inexpensive white school glue thinned with water. 

 

Tip: Once you add a sculpting medium to the fabric, the colors will all blend together and make your project look more unified and nicer.  Trust me!

 

Step 4.  This is what the back of my pumpkin looks like.  A mess!  But no need to stress over this because no one will see it.  I did make sure to twist some fabric into a stem.  

 Step 5. The glorious thing about foam is that it can be shaped and sculpted.  I chose to sculpt and shape after the fabric was added and had dried.  I just thought the pumpkin ridges would be more apparent if added after the foam was covered.  

 

I used a wooden skewer to make the ridges by rolling the skewer over the foam and rocking it back and forth till the ridge was satisfactory.    It worked quite nicely.  I also was able to add more color after the fabric was on the foam.  

 Step 6. I added thin jute to the pumpkin and tied it in the back.  I believe this helped accentuate the ridges.  

Step 7.  I have a few finishing touches. I wrapped the stem with brown floral tape and I added some tendrils to the pumpkin's stem created using FloraCraft Green Stem Wire.  I twisted the stem wire around a wood skewer - which is a great tool for making tendrils.   

 Additional tips for making the pear and the apple:  I made the pear and apple the same way - using muslin covered FloraCraft foam balls.  Once covered, I sculpted the shape of the pear and apple by rolling the covered foam on the edge of a table to help mold the foam till I was satisfied.    The stems of the apple and the pear were created using the end of the wood skewer.  

 

Step 8.  Moving on to the canvas...

This is an 8x8 canvas.  I turned it around and used the back as a sort of shadow box. 

I cut a piece of Authentique Harvest paper  and inserted it into the background of the canvas.  I added ink to the frame of the canvas to blend the project and provide a finished, cohesive look.  

 

I stapled  FloraCraft Burlap Garland to the wood frame of the canvas so that the sculpted fruits could rest nicely in the burlap.  

And here are a few more close ups of the finished canvas to show the gorgeous Petaloo floral accents.  This photo shows  the beautiful reds and greens of the Petaloo Briar Rose Canvas Holiday Mix  flowers (RS5008-502/4).  

 

This shows the beautiful image from the Authentique Harvest paper  topped with a bow and Petaloo's Botanica Mini-Pistachio flowers.

This photo shows how sweet the Petaloo Botanica Mini-Gold/Sienna flower looks here to resemble the cauliflower.

A child's first sewing project by Cherry Nelson

Hello Petaloo peeps!  Cherry here today to share a Child's first sewing project.  Very simple little pincushion perfect to start your kiddo out on.  Pick out some corresponding fabrics and cut 6 x 6 , allowing for your seam allowance. 

 

Pin right sides together

 

 

Sew around edges leaving  an opening and turn right side out so you can fill with fiberfill.  Whip stitch your opening closed.

 

Wrap pincushion with some fun ribbons and start adding your Petaloo blooms

 Here it is all finished!  Kinda cute huh?  Oh so vintage and oh so simple!!!!

Upcycled Gift Tags with Petaloo

Hello, Friends!  I have a true confession to make: I adore Petaloo products!  I even adore their pretty packaging. The background colors and patterns are so lovely, I can never quite bring myself to toss them in the recycle bin.   I have been saving the chipboard bases from my Botanica Mini Blossoms for a while now, and decided it would be a fun "upcycling" project if I turned them into whimsical  upcycled gift tags.  So I dug into my stash of coral Petaloo posies, broke out my Graphic 45 Once Upon a Springtime paper collection and started to play.

You'd never believe that these darling little tags started out as Petaloo packaging, would you? The wonderful thing about the chipboard bases, aside from the fact that they are pretty, is how sturdy they are.  They are just the right thickness for mixed media projects, and the size is perfect for a gift tag.

 

I have always loved this precious images from Once Upon a Springtime.  And, I super love the fact that the Coral range of Petaloo flowers are a picture perfect match for the color palette of these enchanting papers.  It's so nice when products work together seamlessly, isn't it?

 

 

Each tag is built with the same basic "recipe" which I will share with you below in a Snapguide tutorial. 

 

 

I left the packaging hole uncovered, so you can just slip ribbon through the top and attach to your gift.  Or, string all three together to make a sweet banner!

So I created a "Memory Box"
to hold my moments from a recent trip.

 

Authentique's ~ Explore
was the PERFECT collection for my box!

I began my creation with a paper mache
box which I painted and added beach to.

When dry I covered my box
with Authentique's ~ Explore Eight
and added a piece of canvas and cording
to tie my "Memory Box" closed.

 

I proceeded to create layers
using Authentique's Explore Five
a Authentic Life Card
and a few stickers from Detail sheet
a bit of white picket fence 
and a bit of burlap!

I printed out wallet size "memories"
and adhered them to 
the Authentic Life Cards and 
wrote my "memory" on the back.

I finished off my "Memory Box" with
Petaloo Darjeeling blooms
Mini Mix Teastained Blue
Teastained Yellow
and a few
DIY ~ Mixed Leaves

The PERFECT finishing touch to my
"Memory Box"!

Simple Spring Petaloo Stash Project

I have been waiting a long time to make this project! I have been dreaming of using all the little flowers in my "leftover flower pot" stash to make a little spring banner, and this little project exceeded my expectations! I keep two little flowers pots on my craft table, one for little flower leftovers and one for the bigger ones. You can adapt the size of your banner according to your flower sizes and make as many as you want, with 3 being the minimum. This one is made using a 4 inch long by 3.5 inch wide pennants. First cover chipboard with green paper for a "leafy" background that disappears once you start flowering on it.

This is all you need!

Start by anchoring all of the corners first then work your way around the edges and then inside

Use the "warping" of the flowers to your advantage like the green one on the right, it was a little flat on one side so I used it along the edge- don't worry about little bald spots that why we made the background green!

I usually punch holes to run my trim, but with the flowers this is tough, so just glue on your trim, making sure you hit each corner with the hot glue. I found this super cool leaf trim in my stash, it fit perfectly

I used an assortment of Petaloo Botanicas, Darjeelings, and Textured Elements

A Spring Altered Vase

Maggi here to wish you a very happy spring! I love this time of year when flowers start peeking their heads up from the ground and the landscape is dotted with rafts of color.  Here in North Carolina we are treated to banks of azaleas  backed by dogwoods, towered over by stately pines.  Cherry blossoms and ornamental pears are blooming every where, so of course, you need a pretty vase to bring a bit of this loveliness into your home.  Today I am sharing a simple vase that I altered to capture that spring beauty.

 

 

 

This is really a quick and simple project that you could even let your kiddos help you with.  I started out with a simple and inexpensive vase from Michaels.

 

I used a dropper to drip white gesso on my vase.  I simply dropped white gesso  near the top of the vase and let it drip down the sides.  I also painted the green twine white that is wrapping the neck of the vase. 

 

 

 After the gesso dried, I tied some Petaloo fibers around the neck and then added my blooms.

 

I used a Spellbinders Romantic Vines die to cut some greenery to tuck in with my beautiful Petaloo blooms.

To finish it off, I added a little Stickles in crystal around the edges of the flowers and stickled the white gesso drips just a bit.  It's too bad that Stickles don't show up very well in a photo, so you'll have to trust me on this one, it added a really pretty sparkle to my project.
