Summer layouts and DIY flowers

Maggi here to share two summer layouts with you today, both using Petaloo's awesome DIY flowers.

I used Graphic 45's Safari Adventures on this first layout to scrap photos I took at the Miami Zoo where it's always summer! I had a blast dying my flowers to match the tropical imagery in this collection. These flowers are so great because you can easily dye them using mists or other coloring agents.

I colored the salmon colored flowers by simply spraying them with my mist. To color the yellow largest flower, I first misted it with yellow and then I painted on a little red mist on the ends of the petals. Then I quickly blotted with a paper towel so that the color effect would be subtle.

For this flower, I gave it an all over misting with yellow, then I sprayed a little red mist on my craft mat and tipped my paintbrush in it, and painted the flower center and touched the flower tips.

I just touched these sweet little blooms with a hint of red while they were still damp from the yellow mist and blotted with a paper towel to keep the effect subtle.

First, a big thank you to Simple Stories for these bright summery papers that I used to create this family reunion layout! I used the same technique on this layout to color the flowers. I love that so many of Petaloo's flower styles are available as DIY flowers and that picks are also available!

I've used leaf picks in this floral cluster along with textured layers and canvas dogwoods. All of these products absorb color so well.

Oops, one little gerber daisy that was already colored slipped in here. ☺

Enjoy the sunshine

Happy Tuesday to Everyone ...

We have some exciting news today ... we want to welcome a new Design Team Member to the Petaloo Family ... Cherry Nelson.

We are so excited to have her join us ... she is a wonderful designer who loves to make cards and here are three great samples using the brand new paper from Simple Stories ...

Hellllllllllllllo folks! Cherry here today to share in all the fun festivities! So excited to be joining the Petaloo Design Team. I created three cards....once I got going I just could not stop. First up a sweet card I used diecuts on to create a fun "sunshine" to add to the theme. I layered it with a tea stained bloom in yellow from the mini mix.

Aren't those mini butterflies the cutest thing you have ever seen? They really made this card come to life.

I had to dot my "I" in the sunshine sentiment with another butterfly.

Next up a card using the Simple Stories journal cards paired with the mini mix tea-stained blooms in pink along with the tea stained pink petites.

I love that little birdie from the Sunshine and Happiness fundamental cardstock stickers!!! I am hoarding the other one found on the sheet.

Next up a fun card turned birthday card using the happy sentiment from the card stock stickers layered with another mini mix bloom.

Perfect Summer time Birthday card for someone special! The little leaves that come in this collection are adorable.

So easy to bring these cards together with all the fun embellishments and layers you can add!

Well hey there Peeps. Such a fun day for me to be sharing the projects I created specially for the Simple Stories / Petaloo Blog Hop. When I say I love the papers and flower selection I mean I REALLY REALLY LOVE IT!!! We have had the most brutal seeming to never end winter here in Michigan....in fact it was snowing last week. Today is 87 and my heart is singing!!! These Simple Stories Lines are just too perfect for this time of year with their bright cheery colors and fun whimsical patterns. And the Petaloo flowers are the perfect finishing touch to my projects.

First Project...Sunshine & Happiness Card:

Sunshine and HAppiness Card Petaloo Simple Stories 1

This card was soo much fun to create. It really did bring me sunshine and happiness.

I selected a variety of the Petaloo flowers to coordinate with the paper patterns.

Layering the chipboard stickers allowed me to add quite a few in such a small space. Adding spacers is the key to keeping everything level. Have to save room for flowers! A simple not too poofy bow in a coordinating raspberry help to anchor the top corner along with the die cut frame.

While I had the Sunshine & Happiness Collection out I created a tag also....

I used similar layering techniques for this tag but instead of using the chipboard I went with the regular stickers and combined the with the cut apart pages, more diecuts, and of course gorgeous Petaloo flowers.

Two smaller arrangements work well for this size tag. I've also added a more subtly patterned ribbon.

Incorporating a pretty die cut doily in clean crisp white helps to separate some of the busy patterns. Adding spacers between the layers adds depth and give me th opportunity to tuck in some of the blooms.

My vacation may not be until July, but its what I thought about when I saw the Simple Stories Sunshine and Happiness Collection. Since it made me dream of my Costa Rican vacation coming up, I decide to make a little countdown calendar. It starts 4 weeks before and then counts down by each day on the last week. I created it with just some chipboard, Simple Stories Paper, Petaloo flowers and my paper binder.

I made a simple "tent" shape with two 8x8 covered pieces, then made a small inner flap to hold it open at the angle I wanted.

I think I have found a new tradition of making vacation countdown calendars !! I was thinking I could even add some pic to the pages from the trip, super fun idea!

Welcome Welcome to the
Petaloo and Simple Stories Blog Hop!

I was sooo inspired by the DT package
I received, I created 2 projects.

I thought I would do something a bit different
and create a layout.
But it just wouldn't be me to not
add a bit of texture medium and paint...

I began by "mapping" out where I wanted
my "path" of texture medium to go
and applied it through my stencil
onto Simple Stories ~ Dig It
from the Bloom & Grow Collection.

When dry, I applied a diluted mixture
of pink paint to my
"rocks" to create depth and to tie them
in with my "pink" theme.

I just LOVE the photo I chose to use
for my layout,
of my daughter and I on Mother's Day
and the words on one of
Simple Stories ~ Bloom & Grow
3 x 4 Journaling Cards
matched PERFECTLY!

How cute are the
chipboard and sticker banner??

I had so much fun integrating the
chipboard and sticker elements
with my flower cluster which was filled with
Petaloo Blooms
Garden Rosettes x 6 Canvas ~ Pink
Cherry Blossoms x 24 ~ Blush
Petites x 24 ~ Spice and Green
Botanica Mini's ~ White
Flowering Pick ~ Black Berry
Calla Lily Cluster ~ White

For my second project I created a card.

I used the same technique
of applying the texture medium to my card face.

Once again, I applied diluted paint to
my stone path.

I splattered the paint onto the card face.

I cut up the leftover chipboard and
applied it to my "Happy" sticker.

Hello Petaloo Fans and welcome to the Petaloo/Simple Stories Blog Hop! The Simple Story collections are just so adorable so much fun to play with! First up I have 3 tags that I have created with the Sunshine & Happiness Collection.

Here is a close up of each of the tags…this collection from Simple Stories has fun stickers and chipboard pieces that made creating these tags so easy!

Omy I am in love with the Petaloo blooms…they go perfectly with this collection! The NEW Gerbers are just gorgeous! I have also added in some Berry Picks, Dogwoods and the pretty blue ones are from the Blossom BulkPack.

Remember Summer? I'm talking about a lazy hazy days and afternoons spent floating in the pool then napping in your favorite hammock and sipping iced tea on the screen porch kind of summer. Now you're with me, right? Simple Stories has perfectly captured the spirit of those carefree summer days we all dream about in their new "Bloom and Grow" paper collection. And I had the best time pairing the papers up with gorgeous summer hued Petaloo flowers in this Porch Rules Altered Clipboard.

Our new house has the perfect screen porch complete with ceiling fan and a pretty view of our new yard, so I just had to grab this fun paper and dress up an old clipboard with paint, burlap, and posies. It's a standard sized clipboard, and to start things off, I painted all the edges and the metal hinge with Faded Jeans Distress Paint. Then I covered the clipboard with this bright summery plaid paper, which was also spattered with paint.

I don't know about you, but I want to spend my summer on a porch where the rules include things like "read a book, take naps, put your feet up and sip iced tea! To capture that relaxed summer vibe, I stitched the sentiment panel onto some natural burlap, then fringed the edges to add some wonderful texture and dimension. And what is summer without gorgeous, bright flowers blooming everywhere? These Darjeeling blooms and butterflies are the perfect color match for these fun papers.

Do you see those bountiful blueberries growing in my garden? Those are Petaloo Botanica Blueberry Picks, and I am in love with them! I clustered Darjeeling Minis in Yellow, Spice, and shades of blue around my berries, then added a flirty Red Butterfly to the garden. The shabby bow is custom dyed with Candied Apple, Faded Jeans, and Tea Dye Distress Inks.

I wanted to show you how I cut one of the yellow Darjeeling Minis in half with my scissors so that I could tuck it behind this sentiment cluster. It's easy to do, and the flower holds together well in spite of having been cut. I tucked the other half behind into that flowery border in the bottom corner of the clipboard.

I also used a white Sharpie Paint Pen to add some doodling to the letters. It gives the paper a real homespun, homemade look that fits right in with this breezy project.

I was having such a good time playing with Simple Stories papers and Petaloo that I accidentally ended up creating a second project. (I blame the Gnome...he is too cute for words, and he lured me into an extended play time!)

See? How could I resist? I made a really quick accordion style photo album where you can save all those fabby photos of summertime fun.

The little flap has a magnetic closure, but I added a burlap string closure for extra strength. The album is made by joining together 2 strips of 11.5" 6.25" kraft cardstock. Score every 4.25" and accordion fold. Make the flap from the overhang. Easy peasy!

On the inside, I created lots of pockets to hold the cute 4" x 6" life cards which are perfect for journaling and photos. I also made photo mounts with extra kraft cardstock.

Don't you love the sentiments in this collection? I know I do! And the Darjeeling flowers are such a great color match!

You could easily open this album for display on a mantle or buffet table and tuck summer photos and memories inside as the season progresses. Then by summer's end, you have captured all the fun moments into one cute package.

Simple Stories makes it easy to scrapbook, and Petaloo makes it beautiful. It's a match made in scrapbooking heaven!

Hi Petaloo friends, Maggi here to share some Petaloo and Simple Stories goodness with you. I always know that summer is on its way when the hummingbirds come back. During the summer we have hummingbirds every where! I put out 4 feeders and spend a fortune on sugar keeping these beautiful little jewels fed! (You don't need to buy hummingbird nectar, just mix 1/4 cup sugar to each cup of water, heat until the sugar dissolves and you've got hummingbird nectar. Oh and another thing that is really, really important, keep your hummingbird feeders spotless. The black mold that can grow on the feeders kills these sweet little birds. It causes their tongues to swell so that they can not feed and they starve to death.)

OK back to flowers and paper! Aren't these just the prettiest colors? Kind of reminds me of sherbert, mmmm, yum. Petaloo's new Gerber Daisies go so beautifully with this Simple Stories collection, Sunshine & Happiness.

I accented the center paper strip with pink Petaloo burlap trim. I cut a 12" strip in half since I just have the burlap peeking out the edges. I think it adds a nice touch to my layout.

I love these new blooms, they are so delicate looking and they blend so well with Simple Stories papers.

Check out the velvet teal blossoms. They are so pretty and they are a great value with 24 pieces in a pack that includes leaves and jute cord. They have long stems which I twisted together with some of the leaves creating a small vine. Then, I just tucked in some gerber daisies.

I couldn't resist adding this cute little chipboard bird from the collection. He's such a cute little accent.

I really like to make layouts telling a story about our life. Simple Stories Bloom & Grow collection was perfect for telling a garden story. You can see that we had a really beautiful garden growing; then the rains began. It rained and rained and then, you know what, it rained some more. As soon as the water subsided, we dug up all the potatos. but it was too late, we lost the better part of 100 lbs of potatoes.

At least I have some beautiful Petaloo blooms to brighten up my poor drowned garden photo!

I tucked in some Darjeeling blooms too. They have always been a favorite of mine.

Take a look at the Flowering Berry Pick. Those blooms look just like the ones on my blackberry bushes! I love how the berry picks add that extra texture to my floral clusters.

Crafting For Dad with Petaloo

Its tough to craft for Dad's! Especially when it comes to flowers, but in can be done. Most crafty Dad stuff ends up being home decor items, to be given that coveted spot on an office desk or living room mantle. Instead of trying to make something "masculine" make something that honors your dad but that is designed to go in a specific space. My Dad is long passed away, but this little memory is for the bookshelf in my family roman this lovely collection from Simple Stories fit the bill for me. I used a shadow box from a craft store, Petaloo Flowers and Simple Stories papers and chipboard stickers.
