Holiday Traditions and Clothespin Fairies

We celebrate both Yule and Christmas in our household and we have a number of traditions that go along with them. There are the regular things like putting up a tree, decking the halls, feasting and making merry. There's also our yearly argument about how many cookies the Pixie men are allowed to add to the cookie request list. A small tradition I keep is to make a small sweet craft, just a little something, to enjoy during the holiday madness. For a number of years that craft has been clothespin dolls.

In the past I've made peg soliders and winter talisman charms. This year I've made some acorn topped fairies.

The frilly little things look pretty darned cute in their Petaloo flower frocks. The frocks are most easily made with layered elements like the DIY-Daisy Layers or Mixed Textured Blossoms.

Paint your pegs first, with rosy cheeks and striped leggings. Then, simply snip a little hole in the centre of the flower layer, push onto the peg and glue into place. Multiple layers make for a nice full skirt.

Vintage velvet holly leaves make a very nice skirt too!

Add little Sugared Mini Blooms or as many flowers as your fairies demand.

A little acorn cap, a set of wings and your wee fairies are ready to fly and make someone's holiday a tiny bit brighter.

Wintry Card Toting Sleigh with Petaloo and Graphic 45

What a lovely holiday treat to have the chance to work with the Christmas Carol collection from my old friends at Graphic 45. The gorgeous, vibrant colours work so well with Petaloo's blooms. Whether it's red, green or blues... they all coordinate beautifully.

  

I've created a Chipboard Sleigh, perfectly sized to hold your holiday cards and tags. The sleigh is embellished with Bah Humbug and Graceful Garland  from Christmas Carol. A sweet bough of blooms adorns each side.

 

A bough of Sugared Berrys Cluster, Chantilly-VelvHydrangeas and White Glitter Snowflakes adorn each side of the sleigh.

 

The front and back have Christmas Carol Journaling Chipboard embellishments, accented with White Glitter Snowflakes

 

Finally, a bit of bling with Fancy Trims and a whole lot of glitter.

 Let's get the fun started with a CHRISTMAS WALL HANGING from Petaloo DT member ... Nichola Battilana

 

I enjoy working with fabric and creating textile pieces but it always seems to take a back seat to paper crafting. So I was pleased for the excuse to blow the dust off of my sewing machine to create some rustic tags with elements from Canvas Corp.

 

Don't worry, you don't actually need a sewing machine for these. You can easily stitch them together by hand, or even glue them together. 

 

Simply layer a couple of swatches of burlap and canvas, fray the edges, add a vintage image and some pretty Petaloo elements.

 

My images are printed on canvas, but you can stitch through paper if you like the look of those zig-zags.

 

I think these are going to make really pretty additions to my holiday packages.

I think that the Claus & Co. collection from Simple Stories is absolutely adorable. Paired with Petaloo blooms and trims, the everything just shines and sings. Don't get me wrong, I love shabby, frilly, Victorian holiday goodness... but this pairing is just good ole holiday fun.

I thought I'd put the snippets and components of from Claus & Co to practical use, and gussy up some gift boxes.

First, some tiny premade boxes embellished with trims, stickers and brads. There is something precious about small boxes and they often contain the sweetest gifts. And you truly don't have to go overboard to create a prettily packaged present. A bit of Glitz trims, a Claus & Co Bradz and a Pine Pick with cones and berries looks pretty dang cute.

... but sometimes going overboard and making your own boxes right from scratch is fun too! Here's "Oh Joy" and "Ho Ho Ho" made into little boxes and embellished with Petaloo's Glitz trims and Burlap Pointsettias

And sometimes, just once in while, it's nice to add a whole lot of sparkle too. Who am I kidding? I throw glitter on all the things! All the time!

Let's get the fun started with a sweet miniature project from Petaloo DT member Nichola Battilana ...

 

Nichola here, and I'm so excited to be taking part in Petaloo's blog hop with Authentique. To celebrate both products I've created a little flower cart.

 

I think it's pretty dang cute!

 

 

The body of the cart is covered in "Tender" from the Nestled collection. The awning created with "Hearty". I've then added embellishments from 'details' the cardstock sticker sheet from the same collection.

Inside my little cart, all sorts of Petaloo blooms which pair perfectly with Authentiques "Nestled" collection. Just look at how well those Chantilly Mixed Blooms in cream, and Sugared Mini's in mocha coordinate with the colours of the sticker.

A Card for Romantic Weirdo's

I saw a post the other day celebrating Morticia and Gomez Addams' romance. Sure, maybe they are a couple of weirdos... but they love passionately and give the rest of us weirdo's something to aspire to. 

I thought that this quote from the Addams's would make a great card to give your "Cara mia" or "Mon Cher" on Halloween... or if you're a true romantic, any time!

"Last night - you were unhinged. You were like some desperate, howling demon. You frightened me. Do it again!"

How fun! Petaloo's little Chantilly-Velvet Hydrangeas are totally lush and perfect for this project. I've also added a couple of small Burlap Blossoms and a length of Burlap Trim tied in a bow.

 

 

Finish off with some distressing and skull charm, and you've got just the thing to let your weirdo know you love them. :)

I adore Halloween. I love creepy, kooky and ooky things. Old, grimy, scuffed and icky sticky things are my favourite. And so, here's a wee horrific project for Halloween.

The base is a book box that are fairly easy to find this time of year in most craft supply stores. I've painted it black and green with a bit of cracklish aging.

These DIY burlap flowers have been distressed slightly with some murky water. If you work in washes, allowing to dry between layers, you can a achieve a really great stained look. And they look great next to a little cheesecloth that has been stained and stretched.

Add some bugs and Dajeeling leaves and blossoms and your all set to store some spooky supplies in your embellished Spell Box.

Back to School Memory Jar

I have to be honest, I'm usually completely stumped when challenged to create a 'back to school' project. This year however I was a woman on a mission! I knew that I wanted to create a project for keeping memories.

I've taken a good sized jar with a wide mouth. The lid has been gussied up with a bit of paper from Graphic 45's ABC Primer Deluxe Collector's Edition and I've added trims and flowers from Petaloo.

A length of wide Crochet Lace Trim and Burlap Trim are wrapped around the jar, then Burlap Small Sunflowers, Burlap Wild Sunflowers and a sprig of DIY-Baby’s Breath is added. A tag and key are the final touches.

So now I have a place to store all of my son's memories from grade 7. Notes from his adventures, snapshots and small treasures from his pockets will fill this jar and be kept safe and sound. Here's hoping grade 7 is the best year ever :)

Rustic Fall Tags

I love fall. Seriously smitten with it. The colours, the smells... don't even get me started on the tastes! Fall is just around the corner and I've created these cute autumnal themed tags to herald it's arrival.

Tags are pretty dang handy to have around as an alternative for a card or bow. While my husband would have no problem handing a hostess a bottle of wine in a crumpled paper bag... I think I'll opt for adding a pretty tag thank-you-very-much.

For these particular taggy beauties, I've used some Graphic 45 tags, November Flourish and November Cut Apart from Time to Flourish. They pair wonderfully with those sweet Petaloo burlap leaves: Fall Maple Leaf. To the larger tag I've added a Small Burlap Sunflower. The smaller tag has a DIY Burlap Blossom that has been tinted with a bit of watered down acrylic paint.

A little acorn cap, pairing so well with those burlap leaves and looking cute as a button :) And finally, I've added Burlap Trims as a tassel, unraveling them to add to the rustic look of these fellows.

Summer Fun Altered Canvas

I have loads of fresh photographs from our misadventure camping trip last week and I'm celebrating our "Summer Fun" with Petaloo by creating this altered canvas. 

I'm not really a scrapper, but I wanted to celebrate the memeories from our misadventures in camping so this altered canvas was an ideal option.

 

I know that summer fun often means bright, vibrant colours, but in this instance I'm using the DIY-Mini Mix in Teastained Cream just as they are to compliment the understated colours in the photograph. They add just the right amount of texture, and they pair so well with the natural burlap trim.
