Refreshing and updating that old knick-knack (plus some DIY tips)

Jennifer Snyder here today bringing life back into an old item.  

I had a cute wooden purse knick-knack that I bought at a thrift store.  It was cute 10 years ago in a little girl's room but definitely needs some updated love and attention... and some Petaloo flowers to bring it back to life.  I say, "Let's give tired purse a second chance at love".  If you scroll down through this post, you'll find some helpful DIY tips as well to help make your projects durable.

 

Now here's my big secret in refreshing and repurposing items.  If at all possible, I try to salvage what I can and do as little painting as possible.  My expertise is in decorating - not painting.  I know painting can take a lot of time, effort and finesse.  I do not have an abundance of any of those.   So my philosophy is to work with what I have when possible - meaning no painting.  

 

The Graphic 45 "Place in Time" collection had perfect papers and colors for this project and worked well with the purple and green in the purse.  A project doesn't get much easier for me if I can leave the original paint alone.  

 

 

 

Making your home decor durable  

Another important aspect of home decor items is durability.  When making home decor pieces, I always think about pieces being handled, touched, dusted, moved.  Unfinished and untreated paper can become stained, get fragile, warp and the edges can rip.  You can add durability to your home decor paper pieces by coating it with a clear matte finish.   

 

I chose Mod Podge because that's what I had available, but you can make your own inexpensive finish by mixing white school glue and a bit of water and painting onto the project.  You can also use a clear, matte gel medium.  

The key to using these mediums as sealants and protective coatings is to make sure your edges are completely coated and adhered. 

 

I do not use glue on the paper.  I used the Mod Podge as glue.  To do this, I make sure to add the Mod Podge to both the wood and the backside of the paper.  Once the paper is down, it's important to  smooth out all air bubbles with your fingers, brayer or such like that.  Once satisfied, add a final layer of Mod Podge over the paper paying special attention to the edges making sure they are all secure.  

Before adding my gorgeous Petaloo embellishments, I wanted to add lace to the project but I realized the paper is busy.  In order to make my lace pop and give it some definition, I added a layer of paper behind it.  This prevents the delicate lace from getting lost in the busy patterns and embellishments.

Fun Festive DIY Wreath with Jennifer Snyder

DIY Festive Wreath with Instructions

Jennifer Snyder here today continuing the holiday and Christmas festivities right up to the last moment.  Need to whip up a last minute gift?   This is super easy and one of those projects that looks like it took forever in "fussy land" to create.  Let that just be our little secret. 

Scroll down and see my DIY instructions on how to turn Floracraft products , a FloraCraft Styrofoam Wreath and some  gorgeous Petaloo flowers into fun, fast, fab home decor.  

 

Quick DIY Instructions: 

 

Step 1.  I started the project with some fun products from FloraCraft  - specifically FloraCraft Burlap Garland   (which is a "must have" staple in my craft room)  and a  FloraCraft 6" Styrofoam Wreath .  

Step 2.  I wrapped the foam with the burlap garland and secured it with hemp cording.  Adding the cording was a second thought actually after the project was well underway.  I realized that glue and straight pins were not going to keep my burlap in place so I decided to wrap the wreath in cording.  

Step 3.  This is how it turned out before I started to embellish.   

 

 

Step 4.  Embellish with your choice of gorgeous Petaloo flowers.  While I chose Christmas themed embellishments (because I needed a gift), imagine how gorgeous this would look with flowers for any occasion or any season.  Give it a nautical look with some red glitter star picks, white ruffled roses and blue velvet hydrangea accents...or a beautiful spring feel with purple canvas flowers dotted with yellow roses.

DIY Snowman Canvas with Jennifer Snyder

Petaloo by Floracraft...Perfect Snowman Frosty Fun

 Hello  - Jennifer Snyder here to add my brand of creative  joy to the Christmas and winter season.  This creation does come with a little story about one of my favorite Holiday and winter traditions.  

 

I live in snowy New York state.  When my boys were small, they loved to get all bundled up and play in the snow.  Part of the fun was trying to roll  the biggest snowman ever to display in the front yard. (Here's where the tradition in my head differs from reality - so please indulge me for a moment...)

In my mind, the point of rolling the biggest frostiest snowman was to let the neighbors and passers-by know we've conquered the snow and crafted a masterpiece - bedecked in hat, scarf and carrot nose.  Of course the snowman would make his home in the yard till the snow melted.

 

In reality, I'd run turn my back for a moment to grab the camera and the boys would be knocking the snowman down.  For them, the fun was in crushing him flat.   The results were always the same.  Today, however, I get to show you how my snowman would have looked standing proud in my yard - at least in my imagination. 

 

With a little help from some fun Floracraft products,  FloraCraft Styrofoam balls and Petaloo Flowers, I can totally enjoy the season and let my imagination live long past the thaw.    

 

If you scroll down, I'll show you how I created this canvas.  

 

  

Why don't I show you how I made this canvas.  

  Step 1.  As I mentioned, I used an 8x10 canvas as a base.  I grabbed a piece of paper from LemonCraft that reminded me of snow falling, and covered the canvas.  When I use paper on canvas, I like to adhere the paper to the canvas using the appropriate medium - not just glue.  I used matte finish ModPodge.  Other options include:  matte gel medium, white school glue thinned with water. Which ever medium you choose, paint it generously onto the canvas and the paper and let dry.  

 

Why do I prefer to coat my paper?  It protects the edges of paper from rips and tears and warping over time.  It also protects from dust.   When it comes time to adhere the snowman to the canvas, I feel the coated paper will be a better base and will support the weight of the snowman without ripping the paper. 

Step 2.  This project utilized the foam balls from the Floracraft multipack.  I cut the balls in half using my scissors.  In previous projects, I used my kitchen knife.  When I mentioned to my husband that I was heading to my craft room for some styrofoam fun, he ran and hid the kitchen knives.  True story.  

 

No worries - I have a super easy alternative to cutting the foam.  I used my scissors like a knife and scored the middle of each ball - making sure I scored all the way around.   After each ball was scored, I twisted the foam balls apart.  Easy!

 

Step 3.  I  covered each ball with cheesecloth .  To do this, I dabbed a generous amount of ModPodge (or whatever medium you are using)  onto the foam.  Once the foam is covered, I then dabbed more Modpodge over the cheesecloth.  Gobs of it, actually.  The key is to make sure you do not have a lot of excess cheesecloth on the back of the foam.  It needs to lie flat on to  canvas  and excess cheesecloth could cause snowman chaos.

Why did I cover the foam with cheesecloth?  Great question.  So glad you asked.  I certainly could have left the foam uncovered on my canvas.  It's white and looks like a snowball...but I'm trying to think long term.  Seasonal storage may not be particularly kind to raw Styrofoam from year to year.  I do not want to risk little pieces being picked off and having dents in my foam.

The cheesecloth will protect the ball, and still preserve the look of snow.

 

Step 4.  I  also wanted to capture the sparkle of fresh fallen snow ( I live in NY so I know all too well what fresh fallen snow looks like...piles of fresh fallen snow). 

 

I sprayed the balls generously with Tacky Spray and rolled the sticky ball in Diamond Dust by Floracraft.  Oh my goodness  - it is absolutely perfect.   I can't capture  with the effect adequately with my camera but it is brilliant.  

 

Incidentally, I sprayed some matte urethane over the ball after it was dry to keep the Diamond Dust from getting all over.  The Urethane did dull the sparkle a bit, but the effect is still amazing and looks so much like a snow ball.  

 

Step 5.  From here, I am ready to decorate the canvas and create a snowy landscape with draped cheesecloth.  

 

 

Step 6.  Snowman Arms - Ahhhh what to use for the snowman's arms.  Well, I had some older Brown Berry Sprays from Petaloo.  I  cut off the berries and set aside for a different day.  Look how cool the remaining branch is?  And the wire on the branch can be used to stick right into the foam.  

 

Step 7.  Snowman hat - I had to create a custom hat for my snowman.  I cut a piece of fabric that was pretty thin - this is almost like mesh.   It bends and forms easily. I molded it to my snowman's head and held in place with straight pins till I had the shape I wanted.

 

Step 8.  Continue to embellish with Petaloo's gorgeous flowers.  I used Petaloo Botanica Sugared Mini-Burgundy , Petaloo Botanica Blooms White 1102100 some older Poinsettias in Red Vintage Velvet Poinsettias 1137005 mixed with Petaloo Botanica Regal Gold RS5010-002/4 and Petaloo Pine Pick with Cones.  I pulled apart the pine-cones from the pick and added them here and there as wonderful seasonal accents.

After the creation was completed, I dabbed snowflake paste around the canvas for a frosty look.

  I'm Jennifer Snyder, and I chose to create with the Authentique Classic Christmas collection.  I was drawn to the sweet prints and gorgeously classic patterns.   I also know that the Petaloo flowers I selected for my project were absolutely perfect accents.  What a fun pairing.

 

I created a home decor piece with an accompanying card.   The wooden tree form was purchased at a big box craft store.  My job was to gussy it up.   Below is the table top festive tree decorated with strips of Classic Christmas 6x6 paper  and embellished with some holiday releases from Petaloo:

I do love how you can combination everyday Petaloo flowers thoughtfully and have them look perfect for a holiday card, project, gift or layout -endless possibilities.  

 

 

Here's a close up of the main floral cluster featuring the Petaloo Flowers - Pine Pick w/Cones and Berries , Petaloo Vintage Velvet Holly Leaves  and Petaloo Red Burlap Textured Poinsettia  once again.  I added a sweet little ephermera to the cluster from the Authentique paper collection.

 

  

 

 

 

This is the matching card I made for a gift set.  I used the same papers and the same Petaloo flowers for a cohesive look.   The wonderful patterns of the paper are so much fun to use.

Christmas scene with Graphic 45 and Petaloo

Hey everyone!  Its Laura and I am back to share a really fun project I created for one of my end tables when I start to decorate this year!  I started off with just a little Brownie camera like this...

 

 

and turned it into this

 

 

I covered it with the beautiful Graphic 45 papers

 

and added some of the Graphic 45 cards

 

I tied some lace around the handle

I started adding the gorgeous Petaloo poinsettia's and picks!

 

On the back I tied it close with some lace and I added some texture paste then while it was still wet I added epson salts to look like snow and add some more sparkle!

 

on the inside of the camera I added a Christmas tree and two carolers and more 'snow'

Hello!!

Christmas is my favorite holiday.

I love everything about it, from the event that inspired it, hoping for a white one, to wrapping presents and to create Christmas projects.

And here my Christmas wreath!

Petaloo flowers and St, Nicholas Graphic 45 papers... perfect to make this one!

I used Xyron's disposabe sticker maker on some of my fussy cut pieces.  That made adhering them so easy.

I have added "Sugar" to the flowers like traditional Christmas decor.  It adds such a fun snowy effect to my wreath.

  You can bring festive charm and the beauty to your wreath with battery operated lights!

Welcome to the Petaloo blog hop with our very special guests, Graphic 45 and Xyron.  I'm Jennifer Snyder.  As you scroll through this post, I'm sure you'll be able to see the fun and creative joy I had with all these wonderful manufacturers.  

 

I made a matching wooden box/card gift set.  My inspiration for the set was taken from the Graphic 45, St Nicholas collection - the traditional Christmas colors and imagery but with a marvelous twist. I found the bits of black in the paper and matching embellishments so alluring.  I had a black wooden cigar box in my stash and it finally needed to be used.  A divine pairing I must say!

 

This is a closer look at the box.  The front is adorned with Petaloo  Flowers - Darjeeling Mini Poinsettias in Red   nestled in the Petaloo Vintage Velvet Holly Leaves - surrounding Graphic45 - St Nicholas collection's chipboard.  

 

 

Below is the top view of the box - my "helicopter view" as I like to call it. 

 My gold accent choices really make that red and black of the paper and Petaloo flowers pop.  

 

Once again a Graphic 45 chipboard piece is used as a wreath adorned with Petaloo florals -Petaloo Flowers - Regal Velvet Poinsettia in Red  and Petaloo's Pine Pick w/Cones and Berries .

 

This is the card that I created to go with the gift box.  I used similar elements from the box to create cohesiveness - like the Graphic45 - St Nicholas chipboard, Petaloo Holly Leaves and the Poinsettia.   I used the berries from the Petaloo Pinecone Pick.  

 

 

 

I used the Xyron Tape Runner to help assemble the layers of the card.  the tape runner glides along the paper with super ease.  

 

Now for the inside of the gussied-up cigar box.  I grabbed Xyron's 3" Disposable Sticker Maker to adhere the Graphic 45 Die Cuts.  This was a fun process as well.

Hi there Petaloo peeps, Maggi here and I am so excited that the Petaloo team is blog hoppin' with Graphic 45 and Xyron this week.  We've had the beautiful St Nicholas collection from Graphic 45 and some wonderful sticky products from Xyron to work with!

My sweet poodle Nika needed a Christmas stocking so I made this one for her!  I used Graphic45's new Christmas collection, St Nicholas, to cut out the cuff and toe pieces for the stocking and added a tag & banner from the collection at the cuff and heel. 

 

Xyron sent us some great sticker makers and tape runners to use that are the perfect solution for those tiny parts that you need to adhere.  I fussy cut tiny holly clusters and a a Santa hat and ran them through the 1 1/2" sticker maker and adhered to my diecut poodle.  Loved it!  I didn't get glue all over everything like I usually do and it stayed stuck.  Now that's the perfect adhesive for me.

 

I made my cuff by first cutting a piece of St Nicholas plaid for the cuff and toe.  Then I added a Santa tag and banners from the Graphic 45 St Nicholas collection.  The letters actually came from another G45 collection, Raining Cats and Dogs but over those letters I added some banners from the St Nicholas collection.  I used my Xyron sticker maker to turn those banners into little stickers too. Petaloo crocheted lace was perfect to accentuate the cuff before adding my floral cluster.  Ohhh I totally love Petaloo's pinecone & berry picks that I tucked under those beautiful burlap poinsettias and briar roses.

That sweet poodle is a diecut. I used Ranger Antiquities Weathered White embossing powder to make the curly look on the poodles body. That is a great product when you want a grainy textured look.
