Holiday Tags with secret pockets!

Always such a pleasure to get to work with Graphic 45 papers, something about Petaloo and G45 are just divine for holiday crafting. I have created for you my Secret Pocket Tag. This tag can go on a bottle of wine or other gift and you can slip a gift card or cash or anything else in the little pocket. I'll show you how:

First, cut out your Graphic 45 paper about 1/2 inch bigger than your starter tag all around- you don't have to be exact!

Next place your tag in the center and fold up each edge. Make sure the side you want will be showing from the front. I also snip the corners just to make it look a little cleaner. 

Take your tag out and open up the folds- with a knife simply cut a slot from one fold to the other, as high or as low as you like

Then put the card back inside, fold again then use a bead of Hot Glue or tacky glue (tape runner not recommended) around all the edges to secure, and now you have a cool little pocket to stash whatever you like in!

Decorate as you like but a tip is to put whatever you are going to put into the secret pocket first so you can decorate accordingly. 

I love these Velvet Flowers! Tip: After you arrange your flowers, make sure you glue down the bottoms ones first (like the petals) then layer up! Also just use a dab of hot glue in the center back of each flower, then you can pull up and layer the petals as needed

I broke up a bunch of Petaloo Glitter Star picks and inserted them through my Chantilly Velvet Hydrangeas

When I make Modern style designs, I always like to add a vintage touch, but it works in the reverse too. I added the modern little striped paperclip and it really goes great with the tag and holds the gift card in place.-Denise

Quick and Simple Tabletop Decor with Petaloo

The Holiday entertaining season is upon us. Making your own tabletop decorations with Petaloo flowers will make your party something special. I will show you how to make these simple tabletop pieces with supplies you already have in your craft stash! 

First up is our napkin ring. 

Just take a sheet of your favorite scrapbook paper and cut into 3x4 pieces. Roll sheets over counter top edge to give them a little bend- then curve into a circle and attach with hot glue or a strong tape runner adhesive- pop on a Petaloo Flower and your done!

Next up a clothespin can make a perfect wine/drink tag or even a name tag for your guests

Cut a .5 x2.5 inch strip to cover the pin, then cut another little piece of white to add the name- hot glue it on, then top off with a Petaloo flower

Finally I have a super cool Food or Person place card. Make these for seating placards or let your guests know what the dishes are!

I started with a little chipboard circle, covered with scrapbook paper. Then, hot glue just one of the clothespin ends- so you can still squeeze together to add the place card. Add the Petaloo Spring Berry Cluster with a dab of hot glue. For the placard I cut out a small rectangle of matching paper, then added the white cardstock for the dish/person name

So how easy is all of that!? The Petaloo flowers just pop off the table and make these custom decorations something special.-Denise

 Let's get the fun started with a CHRISTMAS STOCKING from Petaloo DT member ... DENISE HAHN

 

The Holidays means its sewing time for me, and today I made a super simple burlap and canvas stocking using Canvas Corp burlap, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist and Petaloo Burlap flowers. I used a favorite technique which is to do reverse appliqué which I think looks particularly awesome with burlap. I give instructions, supplies and some great tips at the end of the pics-Denise

My Petaloo flowers were spritzed with tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Barn red. My Tips for Misting:

Pre-Spray- always pre spray a few pumps before you turn that nozzle on your project- the first few pumps always produces a few spatters! (sometimes you may want that, but if your looking for even tone, pre spray a few inches away first)

Test!- Fabrics and papers all take color differently so test spray a few swatches and let completely dry before you spray your project elements. In this case the burlap and the flowers dried up differently- I loved the color the flowers came out so used them and didn't spray on the stocking

Here is my reverse appliqué, I love the little reveals of the burlap that keeps a rustic feel.

TIP:

Disappearing INK- I use an air soluble ink pen to draw my design to sew around- draw on, sew, and in a few minutes its gone!

TIP:

Odd Flowers- I always use an odd number of flowers in my designs. Its called the "rule of three" in many aspects of visual arts. I learned this from my floral designer at work and it works on paper and fabric flowers just as well

Keep in the theme- My stocking has a naturally rustic look in color, texture and design. I kept my focal piece, my little Doe also in that rustic theme

My final tip:

Hanging your stocking. Try out where you want the hang tab by pinning it on in different locations. For this stocking, putting it on the upper outside corner made it hang super wonky because of the weight of the flowers, so I had to nudge it over about two inches, which looks wrong when you are doing it from the back, but so perfect when you hang it. So don't commit with that stitch or hot glue until you've tried it out!

disappearing ink- available in fabric notions

Instructions:

• Spray Poinsettias with Glimmer mist and allow to dry
• Draw out a stocking pattern on paper in pencil and adjust as needed
• Add a 1/4 inch seam allowance around your stocking design
• layer canvas and burlap together, pin pattern to it and cut out
• Sew around edge of stocking, leaving top open and back stitching at beginning and end
• Turn and press- you done have to worry about right sides together because canvas and burlap are same note sides (as a rule)
• Add in a scrap piece of paper inside the stocking to keep hot glue from bleeding to other side and gluing stocking shut
• Glue on embellishments- I made and additional burlap ruffle in green then added my flowers
• Add a double twine bow, and cut about 4 more inches for hang tab in back
• Do some test hangs of your stocking before finally gluing on the tab

 Let's get the fun started with a Christmas BABY BOOK from DT member Denise Hahn

Today I have created a Babys First Christmas Book for my friend Katie and her sweet little boy Reece using Simple Stories Christmas Collection: Claus & Co. I created it by simply using three pieces of chipboard cut 8.5x6 inches (don't have chipboard? Why not use your old cereal boxes, they work great!). That size is perfect to fit 

the paper form Claus & Co. papers. Each page has room for pictures and to write in what their Mommy and Daddy got them, a great memory to admire for years to come. When making an archival project , make sure you use real glue like Aileens Tacky Glue on both the paper and the embellishments- to make sure they stay attached for years to come- use hot glue on your Petaloo Flowers, then go back in an secure around the petals with the glue.

"Day of the Dead" Choker by Denise

 

Every year during the Fall ... we get requests to post "Day of the Dead" projects ... here is a great "Dia de los Muertos" choker from Denise Hahn with Snapguide directions to go with it!! 

 

The Day of the Dead is filled with the most livley colors that celebrate and remind us of our loved ones who have passed. Today I have created a felt choker inspired by the holidays colors and themes. It was supr easy- just a piece of felt 12 inches by 2 inches. I took some Petaloo Trims to make make ties, and then continued using the Petaloo Fancy and Crocheted trims to embellish. I added in some scrap velvet, tulles and fabrics. Then used my glue gun to add my Petaloo flowers. At the end I decided to add in some of Petaloos Brads and I think it just made the design pop. I used my sewing machine to add on the trims but you could easily use a glue gun for the entire project. "Day of the Dead" Mask by Denise

 

Every year during the Fall ... we get requests to post "Day of the Dead" projects ... here is a great "Dia de los Muertos" MASK from Denise Hahn with "step by step" directions to go with it!!  

 

 Living in Southern California all my life, Day of the Dead celebrations are nothing new to me, I have long loved the artwork of the celebration including the famous Sugar Skulls and Calavera Masks. Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de Muertos) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures on November 1st and 2nd. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. I decided I would attempt to create my own Calavera Mask. I have to say I am totally in love with my result! Why? Well I am not a "fine artist". I have no real drawing or sketching skills, and staring at the blank white mask I got at the craft store, I was thinking- this is going to be a mess! Amazingly, I figured out a way to make it work and now will show you how I did it. Don't be afraid- it really didn't require any special drawing skills- trust me! Now go get a white blank mask at the craft store, some Sharipe Brush Markers, and pencil, some foam core, plug in the hot glue gun, and gather your favorite Petaloo Flowers!

I started by using some Kaiser Craft Stamps to make a few designs- they were clings, so I inked them on the cling using Clearsnaps Surfacez Permanent Ink in black and just used my hand rather than an acrylic block. Then using a pencil and some google images for inspiration I lightly drew out my design- the eraser works perfect so don't worry about making mistakes or starting over if you dont like it.

 

After you are done and like your design- darken your lines with a Black Sharpie. The skull looks best if you darken in the sides giving it a more skull look. There are ton of ways to do the mouths too- just research first

 

Next I wanted a scrolly vine-so made light dashes until I had the look I wanted

 

Now start to color in more. I gave her some eye shadow. With the Sharpie markers, you can go over the top of same colors- but if you touch the other color they will mix

 

I added another butterfly and colored it too (to the left side of temple) Now I laid my mask atop a piece of foam core. I drew about an inch and half away from skull and then lined up the edge as pictured

 

I cut out the foam core and added some black paper to cover the white- I then hot glued it to the mask

 

Now for the fun part! Start with your larger flowers first. Only glue in the very center- this will you allow to layer other flower by slipping them under each other.

 

now start to add more flowers-I made sure to glue some in the crease so they cascaded over the top (see bottom right green flower) I then added the next smallest flowers, tucking them under as needed

 

I also added some smaller flowers onto the scrolly vines I made

 

I bought some Recollections stick on gems at Michaels and added them

 

I finished with more gems on the jaw area, and then took two wired ribbon bows and attached with glue to sides

 

here is the back- I hot glued a ribbon to hang it from.

Petaloo Altered Pringle Can

Hi everyone Denise here with a fun and easy project even kids can do (of course with glue gun supervision). Okay so I am a Pringle fan and have always wanted to use the containers for something fun, and I finally got around to it! NOw this is a Halloween theme, but think of all the different ways you can decorate these with your favorite papers and Petaloo flowers. I used Authentiques Thrilling Kit for this project, and there is a little Snapguide at the end of this post to show you how it's done!

And Petaloo, doesn't just have great flowers- These Vintage Label Plates are one of my favorite embellishments. I just added the sticker behind to really make it pop

Upcycled TP Roll Wreath with Petals Burlap Flowers

Hey everyone, I know these TP roll crafts have been around forever and as I was cleaning out my craft realized I had saved a bunch of them at one time- I just couldn't toss them into the recycle bin so decided to make a little wreath. I made two for you- one an everyday decor piece and the other is for Halloween. They are super fun and easy to make- so here is a little Snapguide to guide you through making your own.

Back to School Lunch Money Bucket with Petaloo

When I was a kid my parents always had a change dish that they would leave lunch money in for school. I decided to repurpose a little galvanized bucket that used to be home to a long dead houseplant to make my own version of the "change dish". I used Petaloos new Burlap Sunflowers, Burlap trims, and a hot glue gun to fancy it up.

I love the realistic fuzzy sunflower center detail- it make these flowers extra special

I used Graphic 45s Alpha Stockers and Die cut Alphabets for the words

In addition to the wide trim piece around the bucket I also covered the wire handle with more of Petaloos Burlap Trims- you get 4 trims to a pack

since the inside of my bucket was a little worse for the wear, I covered it in a little denim

To do the inside trim, I just measured the circumference of the bucket, and the depth- cut out a piece of fabric, ironed down a 1/4 inch hem, then hot glued just a touch down from the brim.

another tip for adding trim to a fluted base is to sew a little dart in on two sides- you can machine or hand stitch- its really a quick little detail that will make your bucket look great!
