Let's Make Paper Dolls with the Kids!

Hi Petaloo friends, Maggi here to share paper dolls with you today!  This month at Petaloo, we're featuring projects that you can do with the kids and grandkids.  You know those days when the kids are saying I'm bored, there's nothing to do?  That's the time to reach for these projects!

Now I always loved paper dolls when I was a child so I thought it would be fun to make dolls today!  I've used a couple of Julie Nutting doll stamps to make my paper dolls but if you don't have any doll stamps, you could have the kids cut out pictures from old magazines.

First up is my mermaid tag that I made with Graphic 45's Voyage Beneath the Sea collection.  I like to use large tags so that I have lots of room for embellishing.  This tag is actually a Graphic 45 packaging tag that I've recycled and it measures about 4" x 8 3/4".  First I covered the tag with some design paper and then painted on a little white gesso to tone it down a bit and give it an underwater look.

 

To make my mermaid, I stamped her on cream cardstock and cut that out.  Then I stamped her onto different pieces of design paper and pieced her together..

I love these Petaloo Botanica Mixed Blooms in blue/green .  I layered them over some Creative Embellishments sea grass and Petaloo Teal Spring Berry Picks to create an underwater scene.  These blooms are perfect to complete my underwater look.

 

 Now add a fun G45 chipboard tag  with a great quote on it to finish it off.  Add a bow at the top and presto!  You've got a great tag to share.  I know the kids will have fun making paper doll tags.  Give the kids some magazines, paper scraps, scissors and glue and let their imaginations go wild.

 Next up, a pretty miss, fashionably dressed for summer in an outfit made from Graphic 45's Ladie's Diary DCE.  This tag has plenty of popped up layers.  That's a fun technique that you can show the kids, just give them some cardboard to use, it's so much cheaper than using foam tape.  Glue the cardboard to the back of your layer being sure to cut it small enough so that it doesn't show, and start layering it up!

Along with the Petaloo flowers. I added a pretty beige Petaloo Fancy Trim detail at the bottom.  I bet you have some bits and pieces of ribbons and trims laying around, so give those to the kids too and I bet you'll be surprised at what they come up with.  I love seeing what children create because their minds haven't been inhibited by "what you're supposed to do."   Their creativity really amazes me.

 

 

 To add some fun dimension, I popped up part of her dress.  This tag really has dimension,  There's the base tag, then a popped up oval frame, a smaller oval frame also popped up, then the doll is popped up with a flirty pop up of her dress.

The perfect finishing touch for my projects is always flowers and I've used some of my favorites on this tag, new  Petaloo Darjeelings, an anemone and roses.

I am excited to be Guest Designing for Petaloo!

Good morning!

 

I am Laura Gilhuly and I live in beautiful Southwestern Ontario , Canada. I am a stay at home mom to 2 fantastic and fun loving young men - Cody is 15 and Ty is 14.

I am happily married for 16 years to my best friend and awesome husband, Jon. He is hardworking, ambitious, determined and loving...I am creative, enthusiastic, emotional and passionate - together we make a great team!  We own our own transport truck and he is a long haul driver so during the week, It is me and our boys and my scrappy stuff!!!   I really enjoy trying new things and creating projects!  I create mostly 12x12 layouts but I do really enjoy creating off the page projects, cards and canvases...anything were I can ink and paint and play and get my hands messy!

 

  My family is the focus of my life, my inspiration, and my motivation to scrapbook. 

I am so excited to be guest designing for Petaloo!

Their flowers are so awesome and the ones I received in my guest package were the DIY paintables!  They are so much fun to work with and will always coordinate with your project!

 

 

The first project I worked on is a 7gyspies solo shadowbox I received in my package.

I was so excited to start on it I forgot to take a photo of it! This is how it looked before but mine was brown!

 

The first step I did was cover it roughly with a paint that was sand color and add some modeling paste using a stencil

 

 

I also added some crackle paste - love that stuff!

Then I decided to add to colors I wanted by using the wonderful

Tattered Angels Denim Blue Glimmer Mist that was also in the package and another of my favorite products the Colourcraft Brusho Colours in burnt sienna.

 

 

Next was the fun stuff - I got to color the awesome flowers! 

I used the DIY- Daisy Layers  Burlap-Canvas in Ivory, DIY-Mixed Textured Layers also in Ivory, DIY- Burlap Blossoms in Ivory,
DIY- Baby’s Breath Pick in White, DIY- Queen Annes Pick in Whit, and the DIY - Dogwood Canvas in white.  I used teh same products to color the flowers that I did the tray!

 

 

 

After I dried the flowers I used some matte gel to adhere some crushed glitter glass and prills to the tips of some of the flowers!

 

 

I added some shells, crushed glitter glass, and Prills and a piece of burlap behind the photo of my husband and our boys, that was part of my package to the shelves of the tray.

 

 

 I really love the beachy, shabby chic feel to this!

 

I wanted my next project to be bright and fun!

So I used this fun photo of Ty being buried in the sand!

 

I started by layering the wonderful Graphic 45 Voyage Beneath the Sea papers!

 

 

Then I started to color the wonderful flowers!  For this layout I used the same flowers as on my tray and also the DIY- Burlap Medium Sunflower in Ivory.

 

To color the yellow ones I dabbed the Tim Holtz Squeezed Lemonade Distress ink on my craft mat, then spritzed with water!

I added some  Heidi Swapp Mustard Color shine spray then dragged the flowers through them to achieve a more dimensional look.

 

 

 

For the bluish ones I used the Colourcraft Brusho Crystal Colors in Turquoise.  I spritzed them with water, added the color crystals, then spritzed them with water again.

 

 

I dried all the flowers, and added some more prills and crushed glitter glass.

Summer Fun Project with Shona

 

Hello Petaloo Fans. Well Summer is here finally and it is camping season. This year I have the joy of having my daughter and grandsons to camp with…and my posts this month are fun things that maybe you can do with the kids. This piece is made with some sticks or driftwood and prettied up with Petaloo!

 

 

Step 1: I got two sticks or small driftwood pieces and wrapped twine around them to secure them together.

 

 

Step 2: Apply some gesso with your finger to give the driftwood a shabby look.

 

 

Step 3: I glued on some gauze and sprayed it all with a soft brown Shimmerz mist.

 

 

Step 4: Time to pretty this piece of wood up with some yummy Petaloo products!

 

 

 Step 5: I tucked in a few seashells and added some Sand Beads and Mica chips to finish it all off.

 

 

Here is the finished project and some close ups.

 

 

I just adore this mix of a Burlap Pick, Mixed Textured Blossoms and Mini Darjeelings.

Hello, Petaloo Fans!  One of the very best things about summertime is a trip to the beach!  Our kids, and now our grandgirls love nothing better than to stroll along the shore looking for treasures hidden in the sand.  We usually end up with buckets full of shells and pebbles and driftwood.  Once we get home, the items often get shoved into a closet or a shoebox and are forgotten.  But I've designed a cute little seashore treasure box that you can make with your children so that the memories of your time at the beach can be put on display in your home.

 

This is a 4" square paper mache box that is just the right size to hold precious treasures from the sea.  I painted the outside of the box with Picket Fence Distress Paint, then sprinkled it with Distress Clear Rock Candy Distress Glitter.  Once it was dry, I sprayed it with a sealant to keep all the glitter from rubbing off.  Then, I sprayed it with Salty Ocean Distress Stain Spray.

 

        

I used papers and images from Graphic 45's Children's Hour paper pads to decorate my box, along with loads of gorgeous ocean hued Petaloo blooms!

 

 

I love to mix and match textures and shades, as well as sizes to lend lots of visual interest in a composition.  On the lid of my seashore treasure box, I've used Teal Petite Botanica ,  Teal Darjeeling Tea Stained Petites, and Robin's Egg Blue Mini Wild Roses.  The mix of blues and greens works so well with the colors in the paper collection and really feel like the sea.

 

The box opens to reveal a little diorama built inside with fussy cut images from the July paper in the 12x12 Children's Hour collection. I've used foam spacers between my fussy cut layers to add lots of dimension here.  I even sprinkled real beach sand onto the bottom of the box.

 

Summer comes and goes in the blink of an eye.  Why not set aside an afternoon and relive all the fun and adventure of time spent by the ocean with your children?  Little hands can pick out shells,  manage the painting and sprinkling of glitter, medium sized hands can fussy cut and  glue layers while Mom handles the glue gun.  You'll build a whole new memory while capturing an old one.  It's a win/win!

We are so excited to have her join us ... she is a wonderful designer who loves to make cards and here are three great samples using the brand new paper from Simple Stories ...

 

Hellllllllllllllo folks!  Cherry here today to share in all the fun festivities! So excited to be joining the Petaloo Design Team.   I created three cards....once I got going I just could not stop.  First up a sweet card I used diecuts on to create a fun "sunshine" to add to the theme.  I layered it with a tea stained bloom in yellow from the mini mix.

Aren't those mini butterflies the cutest thing you have ever seen?  They really made this card come to life. 

 

I had to dot my "I" in the sunshine sentiment with another butterfly. 

Next up a card using the Simple Stories journal cards paired with the mini mix tea-stained blooms in pink along with the tea stained pink petites.

 

 

I love that little birdie from the Sunshine and Happiness fundamental cardstock stickers!!!  I am hoarding the other one found on the sheet.

 

Next up a fun card turned birthday card using the happy sentiment from the card stock stickers layered with another mini mix bloom. 

 

 

Perfect Summer time Birthday card for someone special!  The little leaves that come in this collection are adorable. 

 

So easy to bring these cards together with all the fun embellishments and layers you can add!

My vacation may not be until July, but its what I thought about when I saw the Simple Stories Sunshine and Happiness Collection. Since it made me dream of my Costa Rican vacation coming up, I decide to make a little countdown calendar. It starts 4 weeks before and then counts down by each day on the last week. I created it with just some chipboard, Simple Stories Paper, Petaloo flowers and my paper binder. 

I made a simple "tent" shape with two 8x8 covered pieces, then made a small inner flap to hold it open at the angle I wanted. 

I think I have found a new tradition of making vacation countdown calendars !! I was thinking I could even add some pic to the pages from the trip, super fun idea!

Mom Loves the Beach!

    `Hello, Friends! Happy May Day!  I love the month of May!  It's the gateway to summertime and the month gives us so many reasons to celebrate with its gorgeous weather, beautiful flowers, and fun holidays....like Mother's Day!  I can remember making my mom special cards and little gifts to let her know how much I loved her, and even now, it's a rare Mom who fails to tear up at a handmade gift.  With that in mind, I thought I might share a super cute idea for a hand made Mother's Day gift for those beach loving mome

During our recent move, I found a pasteboard berry box that I'd salvaged from our local farmer's market.  When I received an Authentique "Utopia" Collection pack in my design team package this month, a little light went off in my head, and the idea for this project was hatched.  It's a decorated berry box filled to the brim with beach themed tags, gorgeous Petaloo flowers and Burlap trim.  Wouldn't this look festive on a Mother's Day breakfast tray? 

I coated my berry box inside and out with Studio Matte Multi Medium to give it additional strength and to protect it from spills.  While the medium was still wet, I added  a belly band of blue burlap trim that had also been coated with medium.  To pick up on the tropical colors of the Utopia collection, I layered on Amber Mixed Textured Layered Flowers, Antique Red Mini Burlap Flowers, Pink Canvas Dogwoods, and Antique Blue Canvas Dogwoods.  Every mom loves flowers, and these will last a lot longer than fresh flowers!

I cut 1.5" off Ranger standard manila tags, then covered them with the cute images in the paper collection. Then I added some fun embellies from my stash along with more tropical flowers.  You can never have too many flowers!

The back of each tag has room to write a note, share a memory or post a photo. I love the way the Burlap trims pop with these papers.

The images were so much fun to layer, especially this cute little banner!  Even if Mom is not going to the beach on her special day, you can create that special, laid back, easy going vibe with a gift like this one.

Here, I created my own custom flower using the gorgeous elements from the Petaloo Teal Textured Layers package.  Isn't it yummy?

I absolutely love the texture the fibers add to these tags!

  

I think it would be really fun to make mom a tropical breakfast to go with this beach themed gift box, don't you? 

I spattered these Antique Blue Canvas Dogwoods with a little Dylusions Linen spray, just for fun.

And at the very back of the basket, I tucked in an altered slider box filled with a sweet surprise for Mom.

This was so much fun to "dress up" and I love the pink burlap and Pink Canvas Dogwoods paired together.

The box was just the right size to hold 5 Fun Sized 3 Musketeer bars.  Because while Mom loves the beach, she also loves chocolate! 

And, if you really wanted to knock Mom's socks off, you could throw in a coupon for a beach getaway....just sayin'!

I hope this idea gave you some inspiration for a unique, playful Mother's Day gift.  Serve this up on a tray with a Pina Colada, and Mom will feel just like she's in paradise!

DIY Summer Memories.....

Earlier this year, when perusing my 
local TJ Maxx I came across a GREAT
wooden home decor piece in the 
clearance section. I figured I could
paint over it or whatever
when the notion so inspired me....

Now....having just returned from an
AMAZING summer get~a~away....
I couldn't WAIT to create 
a "piece" of my MEMORY
and my clearance find was
just what I needed.

The first thing I did was scuff up the
shiny finish with my Groove tool.
Now....that's better.

Now, for the inspiration of the flowers on
my "memory" piece....
the Beach Rose,
Queen Anne's Lace
and Goldenrod.....

To recreate the Beach Rose, 
I chose the DIY Burlap Blossoms
sprayed with a bit of water,
and colored with watered down paint
and it was just PERFECT!

 

 

I then pulled out an oldie but goodie....
Darjeeling Foliage Assortment.

....a bit of spray and paint
and both leaves look similar.

And there you have it....
MY SUMMER MEMORY!

The DIY Queen Ann's Lace was the 
ideal addition to my flower cluster.

 

I pulled one of the clusters apart
and tucked then randomly
around my "Beach Rose".

 

As you know.....I love a good quote!
