Let's start off the hop with NICHOLA BATTILANA ...
A few months back I came across a post about "The Festival of Broken Needles", or Hari-Kuyo, a Japanese custom honoring broken sewing needles. As someone who sees the beauty and worth of ordinary objects, I was immediately captivated. Broken, bent and worn sewing needles are saved, then honored on a special day by placing them in cakes of tofu and offering them thanks before they are laid to rest. It's a bit more complex than that, but that's it in a nutshell.
I wanted to honor my own bent needles and so I've created a little mossy box for them to 'retire' in.
I've covered the box with paper from the 6x6" Junque Gypsy pad from Marion Smith and fussy cut some butterflies for embellishment. The corners are dotted with Petaloo Chantilly-VelvHydrangeas. I've also included an Embellishment Brad to finish things off.

Gosh I've had so many bent and broken needles in the past, and I never knew about this. What a unique festival and wonderful inspiration for your project.

What a wonderful idea. As a beader, I have tons of bent beading needles I could fill one of these with.

What a novel idea. I always saved bent needles and pins to use in art projects where the pins stay in the object and it doesn't matter if they are damaged. I've got them in a ceramic pot turned pin cushion made by one of my children as a school art project. Looks like I will need to update it with a few Petaloo accents. Also use needles with broken eyes to quill/spiral wire to make butterfly antennae.

Oh my gosh! What a fun idea and great way to celebrate the Festival of Broken Needles. This has to be one of the most unique projects I have ever seen. Great job!!!! With all the quilters in my family, I just have to create something similar for their quilting rooms. Love it and the history of the festival.
